Pete Smith joins advisory board of Mississippi Free Press
Pete Smith has joined the advisory board of the Mississippi Free Press, a new nonprofit journalism website and multimedia network that launched in March 2020, with the goal to publish deep public-interest reporting into causes of and solutions to the social, political and structural challenges facing all Mississippians and their communities.
As an advisory board member, Smith occasionally writes editorials dealing with his interests in media, gender studies, and southern politics. He also advises co-founder Donna Ladd on political and cultural issues of state importance. He joins an impressive list of Mississippi natives on the board, including: YA author Angie Thomas ("The Hate U Give"); Reena Evers-Everette, the daughter of civil rights activists, Medgar Evers and Myrlie Evers-Williams; Rhodes Scholar Arielle Hudson; political strategist and media consultant Stuart Stevens, former White House correspondent Randall Pinkston; and author A'Leila Bundles, the great-granddaughter of Madam C.J. Walker and author of "On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C.J. Walker," among others.
