Forde & Fisher receive MSU College of Arts & Sciences awards

During its recent general faculty meeting, the MSU College of Arts & Sciences awarded John Forde for his scholarly commitments to the university with a Robert E. Wolverton Legacy Award and Melody Fisher with a research award.

Mississippi State University's Department of Communication Head Dr. Terry Likes interviews Dr. Jessica Collier, an assistant professor in Communication and Media Studies. Collier discusses her recent publications on the topic of fake news. Collier also specializes in political communication and has conducted research on the impact of news trust, scandal, and political efficacy. Her publication in the Center for Media Engagement is entitled, “Even in “news deserts,” people still get news.” Finally, Collier, who teaches courses in Communication Leadership, Elements of Persuasion, and Political Communication, offers advice for students.

Dr. Holli Seitz & co-authors publish article in Health Promotion Practice

Associate Professor Holli Seitz and colleagues Antonio Gardner and Leah Pylate recently published a scholarly article on formative research they conducted with MSU students and parents to inform COVID-19 health communication efforts. The article, "Formative Research to Inform College Health Communication Campaigns About COVID-19 Prevention Behaviors," was published in Health Promotion Practice.

Communication students win 'Best of the South' regional journalism awards

More than a dozen Mississippi State students won top journalism awards at the 2023 Southeast Journalism Conference for their work in broadcast, print and online journalism.

Paula Mabry directs award-winning play

Communication Lecturer Paula Mabry directed the Starkville Community Theatre play “Underneath the Lintel,” at the regional Southeastern Theatre Conference, and the performance won Best Actor and Best Director (Mabry).

Two MSU communication faculty members honored by Mississippi Theatre Association

Two Mississippi State Department of Communication faculty members took home awards from the recent Mississippi Theatre Association annual festival. Instructor Melanie Harris won the award for Outstanding Contribution to Community Theatre - College and University Division, and lecturer Paula Mabry won Best Direction - Community Theatre Division.

Theatre MSU brings Shakespeare classic ‘Macbeth’ to campus next week

Mississippi State’s Theatre MSU next week presents a Shakespeare classic for its final production of the year. “Macbeth,” set during 11th century Scotland, opens Wednesday [Feb. 22] and continues Friday-Saturday [Feb. 24-25] at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday [Feb. 26] at 2:30 p.m. on McComas Hall’s main stage. A special performance for school audiences also is planned.

Smith named MSU’s Mississippi Humanities Council Teacher of the Year

Pete Smith, an associate professor of communication at Mississippi State University, is MSU’s 2023 Mississippi Humanities Council Teacher of the Year. Smith will receive his award at the MHC’s annual ceremony in Jackson on March 24. Approximately 30 awards will be given to Mississippians whose work is recognized for bringing insights of the humanities to public audiences.
