MSU Communication students win annual prestigious awards at PRAM conference

For the fifth year in a row, an MSU Department of Communication public relations concentration student has won the honor of Public Relations Association of Mississippi Student of the Year. Flora Dedeaux, a communication major double concentrating in public relations and broadcast & digital journalism, from Gulfport, Miss., received the 2022 PRAM Student of the Year.

Josh Foreman, an instructor in print & digital journalism, and his co-author, Ryan Starrett, spoke during "Literature at Lunch" at the Natchez Literary and Cinema Celebration. They told the story of John Blommart, who was a retired Royal Navy captain who settled in Natchez in the late 1700s. He ended up fighting off an American assault during the Revolutionary War. A couple years later, after the Spanish had captured Natchez, he recaptured the city using an army of British loyalists and Choctaw warriors.

Dr. Holli Seitz contributed to a study, "Making COVID-19-Related Decisions: A Qualitative Study of University Students," investigating MSU students' perceived benefits and barriers to COVID-19 testing, reporting of test results, and quarantining. This work was part of the university's response to COVID-19, and results informed the university's communication efforts.

Ethan Foster was named winner of the “Radio Broadcast” category at the Society of Professional Journalists Region 12 conference on April 1-2. Foster’s submission will move on to the national competition, where it will be judged against the best in college media.

Christie Jones Lawrence, a communication instructor, presented "Leading Through Crisis" at the 2022 State Public Relations Association of Mississippi conference held in Gulfport, Miss., on April 4. According to Lawrence, managing in a crisis is challenging--even for experienced managers. Her presentation focused on understanding the fundamentals of successfully leading through a crisis, outlining key character traits of successful leaders, identifying crisis management stages, and reviewing John C. Maxwell's seven guiding principles for leading through a crisis.
